Besides creating LTSM, the Handlab takes on additional projects in partnership with organisations, both nationally and internationally. These materials can be applied for enrichment purposes in the SASL classroom and beyond.
Stories
Multilingual Books
In collaboration with Flemish Deaf siblings, Hilde and Flip Verhelst, the Handlab translated the multimodal Flemish book “Sign Language Saves” into SASL and English, and added audio readings of the story in two more South African languages. This book is aimed at readers in the foundation phase.
Using the same model, the Handlab went on to create two more multilingual story books for reading by Deaf and hearing individuals alike. These books, “Party in the Park” and “Stanley’s Two Worlds”, are aimed at readers in the intermediate phase and senior phase, respectively.

A story about a leopard and other animals in their natural habitats
In collaboration with the Cape Leopard Trust, the Handlab translated this delightful text into SASL.

A cultural tale about a Muslim girl from Cape Town
In collaboration with the Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans (Foundation for Empowerment through Afrikaans, SBA), the Handlab translated this unique story into SASL. This story can be viewed on YouTube.

In collaboration with the Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur Afrikaans (SBA), the Handlab translated this Christmas-themed story into SASL. This story includes a colouring book and can be viewed on YouTube.
Informational platforms
COVID-19 in SASL
In collaboration with Stellenbosch University, the Western Cape Government and the Coronawise initiative, the Handlab makes available essential information on the coronavirus, its effects, implications and government regulations pertaining to the pandemic. This information is available on YouTube. This channel also includes a selection of child-friendly information on Covid-19.
Mental Health in SASL
In collaboration with the Wie is ek? (Who am I?) initiative, the Handlab translates information on mental health issues into SASL. This information is available on the Wie is ek? website.
